When kitchens move into living areas

Poggenpohl's new shelf system creates a flowing transition.
Eating, living, communicating – modern kitchens are increasingly becoming a part of private living areas today. Preparing food and drinks together has become a leisure activity and the strict separation between kitchens as a "workplace" and the rest of the home has ceased to exist. As one of the prime movers in setting this trend, Germany's oldest kitchen brand Poggenpohl now presents a new shelf system creating a perfect visual and functional link between cooking and living areas. Available in many colours and veneers, as a solitary wall-mounted unit or as a connecting element, it continues the kitchen's design line into the living area.

Herford, 19.09.2009

"Once upon a time …": The words not only serve as the opener to most fairy tales, but could also herald a description of typical kitchen scenarios in bygone decades. The housewife alone in the closed kitchen, cooking a meal for the family. Not so today. For a number of years, architects have taken account of the desire for a flowing transition between kitchen, dining area and living area when planning houses and flats.

Poggenpohl is one of the trendsetters behind this "new" living experience. For years, the renowned German manufacturer has created solutions going far beyond classical kitchen design, from elegant highboards through the integration of ultramodern smart-home technology to control of the entire technical building services and all media, and most recently a multifunctional Dining Desk that can be used as kitchen table, dining table or desk.

The latest highlight is a shelf system that visually continues the design line of Poggenpohl kitchens into the living area while at the same time creating a separate focus for modern, high-quality living. The 39 cm high and 30 cm deep shelf elements which can naturally also be used in the kitchen itself are available with or without sliding door. They hang freely on the wall and – like the Poggenpohl kitchen – are characterized by clear lines and the sophisticated mix of materials. If desired, the shelf element can also be combined with perfectly matching base units.

The new shelf system permits maximum freedom of design not only with regard to its dimensions, but also in terms of the surface finishes available. It is available in standard widths of 90 cm, 120 cm, 180 cm and 240 cm, as well as in variable widths from 60 cm to 260 cm. All top and bottom panels, as well as the sides and back panels are available in virtually every possible Poggenpohl colour and material. From laminate through wood veneer to lacquer and high-gloss lacquered finishes, including the latest trend colours cubanite (an elegant beige colour), oxide (a light blue), fluorite (a modest green) and curite (a fresh coppery orange). The same also applies for the sliding doors. The number of possible combinations and design variations is consequently almost infinite.

With the new shelf system from Poggenpohl, kitchens move into the living area, bringing together what has always belonged together.
